Miss Friman's war
Not all battles are violent. Meet a courageous group of women who takes on both the male rulers of the day and a corrupt grocery industry. The story is partly based on actual events around the Swedish all-female food co-op Svenska Hem, which was founded long before women even had the right to vote.
It is 1905 in Stockholm, Sweden and people’s lives are changing rapidly due to the introduction of new technologies. At the same time, food poisoning epidemics are common among low income families and the line between different social groups remains clearly defined. The role of women is supposed to be nothing more than smiling housewives and devoted mothers.
This is the situation Dagmar Friman finds herself in when she returns to Sweden after several years in London. She is headstrong and believes firmly in equal rights for women. After meeting the young errand boy, Gunnar, she also starts noticing other injustices in society. When she discovers Gunnar’s miserable living conditions and learns of his brother lying sick with TB – a disease transmitted by bad milk – she finally realizes what her mission in life is.
Miss Friman and her friends resolve to open a co-op grocery store for women, run by women, called Swedish Homes. It will be a store that sells unspoiled food at prices even workers can afford – a revolutionary idea at the time. When the all-male board of the Stockholm Wholesale Association learn about the women’s business plan they start fighting back with every trick in the book, including illegal blockades.
Will the women surrender to all these obstacles, or will they be able to open the first ever Swedish Homes store on time?
It’s 1906 and the co-op grocery store becomes a sevret meeting place for a group of women fighting for their independence. But new obstacles arise as the women fight for their rights.
It´s 1907 and this time Mss Friman and her friend’s are challenging Sweden’s out-of-date prostitution laws, which protects sex buyers while victimizing women on the streets.
It’s 1908 and the labour movement is on the march in Sweden. But Miss Friman and her friends start a march of their own, because working women are not welcome in the unions due to their lower salaries weaken the mens stance in their battle for better pay.
