Video Packages – a framework for managing technical complexity

SVT follows a framework called Video Packages to clarify the complex area of video quality, align expectations and deliver a competitive yet cost-conscious viewing experience through concrete modernisations in sound, picture and technical workflows.

The Video Packages have been translated into detailed technical specifications, which are concrete documents that enable practical implementation, minimise confusion in the production chain and support technical staff in specifying requirements, planning and carrying out productions.

More on the Video Packages

• Small – for content that needs to be produced quickly and reliably, such as news.
• Medium – the “sweet spot” for our regular programming, films and series, with a strong focus on the viewing experience.
• Medium+ – a temporary level between Medium and Large that delivers an enhanced picture experience for our regular programming, films and series, with a strong focus on the viewing experience. Our ambition is to remove this intermediate level over time by eliminating the technical limitations that currently make it necessary.
• Large – dedicated to our major productions where we join forces across the organisation, with a focus on maximising the viewing experience and ensuring long-term sustainability.

For the audience, the main effect will be an improved and more modern viewing experience. Content will be presented with a higher perceived quality in both sound and image, across online and broadcast platforms, creating a stronger sense of presence for the viewer. In addition, this technical advancement enables us to distribute content in a more cost-effective way, which in turn helps to reduce the viewer’s data usage.

The clearest, and by far the greatest, advantage is that the Video Packages modernise how SVT works with content from a technical perspective. The Video Packages help us streamline our internal workflows and enhance the viewing experience. Internally, this can be summarised into three main benefits:

1. Clarity around technical complexity – creating a shared language for technical specifications across all stages, from production to distribution.
2. Modernised material archiving – ensuring that content is future-proof.
3. Greater return on invested work hours – through improved efficiency.

By standardising formats for sound and image within our workflows, the Video Packages also make it much clearer for individual employees to understand what applies to a given production. In practice, this standardisation means that we are introducing new technical specifications at SVT, detailing exactly how to work with the Small, Medium, Medium+ and Large packages.

In turn, this makes it easier for the various stages of production, post-production and distribution to prioritise resources – so that, for example, large drama productions can achieve higher quality, while news clips can move through faster and more efficient publication flows.
